Oshkosh Warbird Display

Quang Tri Vietnam October 4, 1966 4.6 hours in 0-1E aircraft number 202.  While on a routine recon mission, aircraft was hit multiple times by ground fire in the belong Valley.  Air strikes were called in after discovering a large weapons cash (ammo dump) having multiple secondary explosions on nearly all of the 17 flights of jet fighters being held on target over several days of bombing.   

After seeing a flash from the ground, Neubauer turned his head to investigate and in that instant a bullet creased the back of his head.  Realizing then that had he not seen the flash from the ground and turned, he most likely would have been instantly killed.   Neubauer also describes being dehydrated and concerned he may pass out while flying back from a mission.  He then spoke from air to ground with the camp flight surgeon to assess his symptoms and see if he could do anything to mitigate the risk of going unconscious.  

This is the night of the Young Eagles dinner held at the annual Oshkosh fly in on July 27, 2012.  Wearing his Mess Dress Uniform for a special evening among world class aviators, the "who's who" of aviation. 

That night Neubauer was surrounded by people asking him about his medals and telling stories of his experiences as a combat pilot and military career. 

Personally meeting aviation legends like; Bob Hoover, General Charles E McGee (one of the last Tuskegee Airman of WWII) who, during a "one-on one conversation" determined they both shared the same flight instructor in the military!   Sully Sullenberger  United Airlines, "Miracle on the Hudson" and many many others!  All the siblings turned out for the week long fly in event at Oshkosh WI in honor of Neubauer's military service.
